Hello HAL

Hello HAL is a very simple WordPress plugin based on the now famous Hello Dolly plugin created by Matt Mullenweg. “[ Hello Dolly ] is not just a plugin, it symbolizes the hope and enthusiasm of an entire generation summed up in two words sung most famously by Louis Armstrong. Hello, Dolly. This is, by the way, the world’s first official WordPress Plugin. When enabled you will randomly see a lyric from “Hello, Dolly” in the upper right of your Administration Panels on every page but the Plugins panel.”

Hello HAL was created as our hasty introduction into the world of WordPress plugins. The name HAL is derived from HAL 9000 ( or Heuristically programmed ALgorithmic Computer ) an artificial, sentient on-board computer of the spaceship Discovery from Arthur C. Clarke’s Space Odyssey saga, which was later made into the 1968 Stanley Kubrick movie 2001: A Space Odyssey

We have removed the Hello Dolly lyrics and replaced them with some of the most memorable, not-so memorable, sometimes funny, science fiction movie quotes. To complete the look, we provide the name of the speaking character as well as the movie title for some reference.

After installing the plugin, the quotes appear in the upper right-hand corner of your WordPress administration panel. Upon a page refresh or switching administration screens, they alternate between a set of predefined quotes. Please note the quotes are not displayed on or within the web site itself, but are restricted to the administration panel.

Hello HAL has been updated for users of WordPress 2.7 and is no longer supported on earlier versions. Please refer to the WordPress Plugin Repository to download a version suitable for users of WordPress 2.6.5 and below.

Installation

  1. Download the plugin and expand it.
  2. Copy the hello-hal folder into your plugins folder ( wp-content/plugins ).
  3. Log-in to the WordPress administration panel and visit the Plugins page.
  4. Locate the Hello HAL plugin and click on the activate link.
